First weekend in Daegu, South Korea

Ok, so here's what happened this weekend:

Friday night I went out after work with the group that Justin organized. It wa
s a bunch of the new foreign teachers that had just
gotten into town (like me
) and were wanting to meet others, get out, have fun, and just re
lieve some stress. It was a lot of fun. We went to a few bars an
d drank a bit. The first stop was T-Birds, which was
owned by a Canadian and was kind of small. Then we went to Commune's, which is like the popular foreign bar in downtown. There we had a few more drin
ks and a few of us signe
d up to play trivia for the night. My team consisted of Justin, Sarah, Ethan, and me...but eventually became Nate, Sarah, Me, Ethan, and sometimes Justin and Kelly, haha. We played for about two hours, getting steadily more drunk as we played, but ended up coming in third place! And there was even a Doctor Who question!!! I was so psyched about that one :-D And of course we got it right. After we played trivia,
Sarah, Nate, Ethan, and I went to Burger King for some food because we were fucking starving and we ended up having some really interesting conversations. The
best that night was the philosophical debate about the euphemism "it's like apples and oranges." haha. After BK, Sarah and I went home because we were exhausted.

SATURDAY: I woke up a little later than usual and got the apartment straightened up for the internet guys to come. They arrived on time

(novel concept! not like in America) and were done hooking up the internet in about 20 minutes. Had a little bit of trouble connecting it to my computer because I have a Macbook, but we got it worked ou
t eventually. So now I have internet!!! Spent the rest of the day pretty much relaxing, surfing the web, catching
up with people, and goofing off around the apartment. Als
o did my first load of laundry, which is still drying. Around 9:00pm I took a taxi downtown to meet u
p with Sa
ra
h and some of the others for a night on
the town. We went to a fe
w bars and a few dance clubs
. The first stop was actually McDonald's because I was fucki
ng starving. Then we went to the Holy Grill, which if I knew was going to be a stop and a restaurant, I would have eaten there instead. Some of us ordered fo
od (Sarah and I split a plate of poutine, which is like Can
adian and is basic
ally cheese fries smothered in gravy). It was pretty good. We had our first round of cocktails there, and then went to Commune's where we basically just stopped in to say hey to people. After that, we ended up at Itaewon Crew Pub and had a few pitchers of soju, which is a Korean alcohol that's cheap and good. It's like a smoother version of vodka and comes in different flavors. We had like three pitchers and played a few drinking games, including 100 Won (or the Korean version of quarters/chandelier/big cup...whichever you know it by). That got us pretty good and wasted, so we decided to go
dancing at that point. We ended up at Club Monkey and it was pretty cool. Crowded and dark, but interesting. I took a lot of pictures there, so they can be viewed
on my facebook for those of you that have it. After the club, we basically split up and went home for the night...it was 4:00am by this point. Sarah an
d I split a cab and she crashed at my place so we could use the internet before bed.

SUNDAY: Sunday was less eventful and definitely alcohol free. The group from Saturday minus Jeff, Ashley, Nove, and Desmond, but plus Paige and Ryan ended up wandering through downtown and shopping. We went to the bookstore and I bought a book on trying to learning Korean. Then we stopped at a few 1000W stores (or dollar stores) so we could pick up a few things. After a few hours, we decided to go back to Sarah's place and just hang out there. We picked up some pizza and went back to her place for a bit. Nove came later after Shane and Paige
left, and we just
ended up talking more. Then I went home and c
rashed because I was so tired.

But overall it was a great weekend and I can see myself having a lot of fun here after it. If every one is as eventful and fun, I could get used to this whole teaching thing.  Below are some of the pictures I took from this weekend and the stuff we got up too. Enjoy!

That's a cool thing about Korea. Things are cheap, food, drinks, and cabs. Lucky you going out and partying like that! I'm so fucking proud of you.

I just came across your blog. Sad to see no recent posts. I'm currently in Daegu teaching English as well. I got here in December. Maybe we can run into each other. You are lucky that your school had other foreign teachers for you to speak with.
